The Surb Gevorg Church Complex

The project to restore the Cathedral Church of the Georgian Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Surb Gevorg (Saint George ) Church (XIII c.), began in 2012. The project was supported by the Georgian government and received the blessing of the Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II. Involved in the project to restore the church was the international team of specialists from Armenia and Georgia. Acting as consultant for questions of the restoration of frescoes was the head of the Florence Center for Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Monuments Fabrizio Iacopini.

Taking place on October 31, 2015 was the opening and reconsecration ceremony of the cathedral church. A cultural-educational center will be created at the church at the next phase of the program.

Surb Gevorg Cathedral was restored solely through charitable donations. The overall cost of the church restoration project totals $3.5 mln.
